Restless is an espionage novel written by William Boyd, published in 2006. It won the Costa Prize for fiction. The novel depicts the tale of a young woman who discovers that her mother was recruited as a spy during World War II. The book continually switches between time periods and, in doing so, from first to third person. According to the author, it is one of the first novels to deal with the British Security Coordination service in New York. The book gained general public interest when it was. Restless by Wlliam Boyd is a very enjoyable WWII Spy Story and as you'd expect from Boyd, brilliantly written. It's such a nice change to see the two main characters in a spy story being females, mother Sally and daughter Ruth. I loved both of these characters. The story is set in the 1970s with WWII flashbacks the spy bits, for me it worked really well. Just as I was finishing a section of the 1970s part of the story, I was ready for the 1940s part, and vice versa. Then comes the double cross, the unconventional use of a pencil, the escape and the long, restless years as someone else. Boyd has written a crackling spy thriller, but more than that, he has evoked the atmosphere of wartime espionage: the clubby, grubby moral accommodations, the paranoia, the tense sexuality. British author William Boyd's novel of war and espionage, Restless, is set as dual voiced. Part is written in the early days of WW2, while the other is written in mid-1970s Oxford. It's a tricky thing for a writer to do, but William Boyd's been writing for a while now, and he carries it off pretty well. Ostensibly a spy thriller, Restless is one of William Boyd's best novels. The characters are entirely convincing, the settings rich, and the pace compelling without being frantic. Any musings about identity or love are understated, implied rather than drawn out. Restless, by William Boyd. Doubled agents and reflected glories. By Patrick Gale. However, Boyd was never going to deliver a thriller that wasn't also literary. To that end he risks setting his espionage story within a second story set in 1970s Oxford. When her indomitable widowed mother starts monitoring the woods around her house, claiming someone is trying to kill her, quietly radical single mum Ruth assumes she is becoming senile. Restless is either a spy thriller which reads like a literary novel or a literary novel which reads like a spy thriller. William Boyd has woven a clever tale based on the true activities of the British Secret Service to coax a reluctant American public into joining the Second World War
