Additional singles, as well as a pair of albums - Yo Soy Chicano 1971 and Their Second Album 1975 - were released during the '70s. From the latter part of that decade and forward, the Royal Jesters were infrequently active. Later albums included Tribute 1996 and Odyssey: The Journey 2005. They were students at Cooper Junior High School in Harlem, who graduated from singing under an elevated train station near 120th Street to the amateur night contest at the Apollo Theater, where Paul Winley discovered them and later signed them to his Winley Records. Reviewed by Thomas Fawcett, Fri. Formed at Lanier High School in the late Fifties, the Royal Jesters long ruled the San Antonio teen scene, plying sweet soul and heartbreak ballads at local dances, hops, and talent shows. The group's catalog has now been lovingly compiled by the meticulous vinyl archivists at Chicago reissue label Numero Group on English Oldies, a 28-song retrospective spanning the group's golden years, 1962-67. For the first time, English Oldies gathers the best early doo-wop, R&B, and blazing Latin rock and soul from these Tex-Mex masterminds-a simmering melting pot of diverse regional flavors, best served hot. 9 out of 5 stars. Like their hometown, the Royal Jesters serve as a kind of hinge on which to chart cultural turns-from their earliest beginnings inspired by the mass culture wrought by 1950s youth trends and rock n roll, they gradually evolved into a popular Spanish-language Tejano act.
