Richards Recorded during the Banquet was to be Brian Jones last full album with the Rolling Stones he had become so dysfunctional by the summer of 1969 that the band had to ask him to leave. In the meantime, his contributions to Beggars Banquet showed his astounding versatility: in addition to slide guitar on No Expectations, he played harmonica on Dear Doctor, Prodigal Son and Parachute Woman along with Mick Jagger. He also contributed sitar and tambura to Street Fighting Man, played mellotron on Jigsaw Puzzle and Stray Cat Blues, and sang backing vocals on Sympathy For The Devil. But Beggars Banquet, which turns 50 years old this week, might have been the most consequential. It was the first work to show that a rock act could reinvent itself in the face of irrelevance, the first great comeback album of the genre, and the earliest indication that rock n roll lives might be capable of something like second acts. The Rolling Stones of 1968 cant really be understood without discussing the Rolling Stones of 1967. That year, the Beatles had released Sgt. It was released by Decca Records in the United Kingdom and London Records in the United States in December 1968. Do someone knows what the initials on the cover stands for (R.S.V.P)?
In the alternate cover means "Reserve please". It's supposed to be an invitation.
In the context of social invitations, RSVP is a process for a response from the invited person or people. It is an initialism derived from the French phrase Répondez s'il vous plaît meaning "Please respond". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSVP_(invitations)
I think for reservez s'il vouz plait ... It means
A and B-sides differ: A is without speed, B is with speed indicatorA is times new roman, B is Arial (or similar)Must be a crossover.
Incorrect image of backcover. It doesn't add up to the description (patents pending)
I have a question: both matrix run-outs on my grooves end in 1K and on the label are upside down right above the SKL.4955. Don't see a listing like that in Discogs. Anyone gotta a line on this vets
Just out of curiosity, I went to the Master Release of the album, which happens to be a 1K/2K. However, it does exist on the Data-Base and the photos and text do correspond very closely to what you possess. I have had various copies of this album, but sadly, I have sold them : ( Here is the url:http://www.discogs.com/Rolling-Stones-Beggars-Banquet/release/5727135I am unsure if it would be necessary to create a new individualized entry based on one differing matrix number or the addition of the "JT" tax code. Perhaps this issue can be brought to the forum?
jdekluiver It appears as if you have the master pressing of the 1968 "Master" Release which is not to be found on Discogs since no ons submitted it! As mikkris highlighted all of the features of this album, there is no reason for me to reiterate them. However, both of the matrices on S1 and S2 must end in 1K and on the reverse of the gatefold jacket, on the lower right hand quarter, there is italicized text concerning patents. I have never found a mono jacket of Beggars Banquet which contained this additional text. It seems to be limited to the SKL 4955 Initial pressing which has the 1K/1K matrices.
I've found XZAL-8476-3K / XZAL-8477-3K but it is "boxed" Decca stereo label, not unboxed. Would it still be an original pressing? Thanks (if this is indeed a forum for questions),Ian in Canada
