Randall attended The Lawrenceville School, where his father was an English teacher. He then attended Harvard University, became assistant professor of music and choir director at Wellesley College, and received a doctorate in music from the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music. Born in 1899, Randall Thompson was similar to Frost in that he spent much of his childhood and adult life in New England. In 1927, Thompson was appointed assistant professor of music and choir director at Wellesley College in Massachusetts and, after gaining standing in the music world, began to teach and conduct at Harvard, Princeton, Juilliard, Curtis, the University of Virginia, and Berkeley.
