The Mercury Theatre on the Air first known as First Person Singular is a radio series of live radio dramas created by Orson Welles. The weekly hour-long show presented classic literary works performed by Welles's celebrated Mercury Theatre repertory company, with music composed or arranged by Bernard Herrmann. The series began July 11, 1938, as a sustaining program on the CBS Radio network, airing Mondays at 9 pm ET. On September 11, the show moved to Sundays at 8 pm. The Mercury Theatre on the Air was an hour-long dramatic radio program which began in the summer of 1938 on the CBS radio network. Paul Holler, writing in Critique, described the program's origin: Radio, with its power to excite the imagination and actually involve the audience in the creative process, had huge potential as a medium for serious drama. It seemed inevitable that the day would come when this medium, which had made Orson Welles a household name across the country, would become a part of his serious theater ambitions. That day came in 1938. Orson Welles - The Ultimate Collection - Orson Welles. The finest radio drama of the 1930s was The Mercury Theatre on the Air, a show featuring the acclaimed New York drama company founded by Orson Welles and John Houseman. In its brief run, it featured an impressive array of talents, including Agnes Moorehead, Bernard Herrmann, and George Coulouris. The show first broadcast on CBS and CBC in July 1938. It ran without a sponsor until December of that year, when it was picked up by Campbells Soup and renamed The Campbell Playhouse. Theatre of the Imagination contains over five hours worth of Welles'original radio broadcasts, which range from his cackling antics as pulp fiction hero The Shadow to broadcasts on classics like A Tale of Two Cities and Hamlet. The only notable absence is Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast, famous for the widespread panic it caused when the listening public thought the descriptions of invading martians were real and actually occurring. The producers of the disc do explain this somewhat by noting they sought to restore more of his obscure or hard-to-find work, but it woul.
