If you've ever played an instrument, you've heard this album already, and probably, the cacophony is 90 percent painful. It's like a noise band that has never spoken to one another, attacking you in totally random fits based on the unrelated logics of strangers. But then, after you've endured thirty minutes of arbitrary noodling, some kid starts tenderly whispering Green Day's Time of Your Life, and it's all worth it. Some cliques gather in the acoustic guitar room and the occasional couple show off for one another but this place is mostly loners. Trying out a guitar or amp or whatever, they probably didnt come here to jam with others. But the din has an ensemble effect and the unintentional group is abiding some unspoken rules. Theres a general respect in terms of volume, and sometimes strangers play in the same key and seemingly with one other. Noah Wall's new album is a field recording of a Guitar Center in Manhattan. During his quest, Wall took careful pains to not interrupt the unwritten rules of the rooms or let the players know that he was recording them. A block away, I put on a pair of microphones you might find in a spy catalog. They look like earbud headphones but are actually binaural stereo mics that go in each ear. No one suspects Im recording them more like listening to music or something. Give Your Opinion on Live at Guitar Center. FAQ Staff & Contributors Site Forum Contact us. Music & Arts Center. Well, over the course of three days, artist Noah Wall went to the Manhattan Guitar Center and surreptitiously recorded strangers -people like you and me and our children- banging on drums, singing, hammering on keyboards, and emitting other loud cacophonous noises. He then made the recordings into an album. It's called Live at Guitar Center and it's almost unlistenable free to download though, unless you really lean in and let it envelope your senses.
