Sleeps with Angels is the 20th studio album by Canadian, American musician Neil Young, released on August 16, 1994, on Reprise as a double LP and as a single CD. Co-produced by David Briggs, the album is Young's seventh with Crazy Horse. The album was conceived as a conscious attempt to recapture some of the atmospheric experiments Young and Crazy Horse played around with in the After the Gold Rush era. Although the majority of the album was recorded before the fact, Young created the title track. Though it once again reunites him with Crazy Horse and includes such typical rock workouts as the lengthy Change Your Mind and the raucous Piece of Crap, Sleeps With Angels is more musically varied than most of Neil Young's albums with his erstwhile backup group, ranging from piano-based ballads like the album opener, My Heart, and closer, A Dream That Can. The ominous, rumbling title track is haunted-musically and spiritually-by Kurt Cobain's ghost, but Young also turns his bleak perspective to America at large: Driveby is an aching acoustic rendering of gang violence, while Safeway Cart is an eerily desolate portrait of homelessness framed by a haunting, hypnotic bassline. who werent even born when Sleeps With Angels was released in 1994. Like Youngs film-making, Crazy Horse have somehow contrived to get no better at all over 50 years. Unlike Youngs film-making, they didnt need to improve: from the moment they lumbered into view, horrifying Youngs peers with their rudimentary abilities, Crazy Horse sounded amazing, like some hulking, rusty bit of farm machinery that barely works but somehow generates incredible power
