Argentinian guitarist Federico Aubele set out to create a solo record that crossed electronica, dub, and Latin guitar music while capturing the sound. His album, Gran Hotel Buenos Aires is like the reverse image of trip-hop. Aubele's songs are atmospheric, driven by sampled 2004 15 Songs. Driven by a love for his native Argentinas tango tradition and drawing from his world travels, his debut LP is a swirling mix of folk, dub, electronics, and bolero. Opener Ante Tus Ojos sets the angelic and haunting mood with a vintage accordion, gentle record scratching, and time-warped vocal samples laced with sweet longing. The rest of the Thievery Corporation-produced album just grows in layers as it progresses, and lingers after the last note. Songs in album Federico Aubele - Gran Hotel Buenos Aires 2004. Gran Hotel Buenos Aires is a wholly brilliant album and Federico Aubele may be to Argentina what Sigur Rós is to Iceland: the most forward-thinking and experimental artist to capture the sound of his homeland's cultural, symbolic, and physical geography.
