Album

The Carnival Bizarre is the third album by British doom metal band Cathedral, released in September 1995 through Earache. Released in 1996, the related Hopkins The Witchfinder General EP features that titular track along with four additional songs. Jem Aswald, in Trouser Press, wrote: Pagan idolatry aside, Carnival Bizarre is Cathedrals best and tightest album yet, rectifying many of the indulgences of the past and concentrating on throbbing grooves and viscous riffage and a shout-out to Huggy. David Yvinec An absolutely fascinating album. Cathedral has an unique style. and a lot of second degree humour. They mix elements of 70s hard rock music mostly Black Sabbath, with elements of psychedelia and an heavy dose of doom metal. While they do not take themselves seriously, they play and sing as if the past, present and future of doom depend upon it. The Carnival Bizarre finds Cathedral nailing down their neo-Black Sabbath sound consistently from beginning to end with no filler, setting them apart from nearly every other band in the mid-'90s heavy metal scene. The album's consistency arises most likely from the band's streamlined lineup with only vocalistlyricist Lee Dorrian and guitarist Gaz Jennings remaining from proceeding releases. These two collaborate on each of the ten songs, perfecting their formula for gothic fairytales set to monstrous grooves of castle-sized guitar riffs
